
TECHNOLOGYPrecision is not a single number - it is a bundle of tolerances on dimensions, running accuracy and noise. Standards let buyers specify exactly what they need without vague marketing claims.
In the inch-world, ABEC grades (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) describe dimensional and running-accuracy tolerances; in the ISO world the equivalent is tolerance classes P0, P6, P5, P4 and P2 (P2 being the tightest). Higher class means tighter tolerances on bore, outside diameter, width, runout and radial slack - and, typically, lower vibration and noise.
P0/ABEC 1 suits general machinery. P5/ABEC 5 is common for machine-tool spindles and pumps. P4/ABEC 7 and P2/ABEC 9 serve high-speed spindles, precision instruments and aerospace, where runout and heat must be minimal. Tighter classes cost more and are unnecessary for most applications, so the right choice balances performance against budget.
Beyond class, internal clearance (the slack between rolling elements and raceways) matters because bearings expand in service. A bearing fitted with interference on a warm shaft can lose clearance and preload; selecting the correct initial clearance (often a larger "C3" group for higher operating temperatures) prevents seizure or excessive预load.
