Two Failure Cases with Airplane Wheel Bearings in Canada

On February 18 2020, an Airbus A319-100, which belonged to Air Canada and operated a flight from New York (USA) to Toronto (Canada) with 120 passengers and 5 crew members, made an emergency landing at the destination airport. When landing in Toronto, the crew reported a possible chassis problem.

After departing from the American airport of La Guardia, in order to cool down, as shown by the instruments, the crew did not pull-in the heated chassis for some time. When the plane approached Toronto Airport, the crew asked to check the chassis from the ground. The board was allowed to make a low approach at GDP 24, so that the control tower could inspect the wheel chassis, and noticed the absence of the right main wheel.

The aircraft was subsequently configured to land on Runway 23, where it landed without further incident. The Canadian Transportation Safety Council said on February 25 that, according to the photographs taken, the outer bearing appeared to be out of order, which allowed the wheel assembly to slip out of the axle. The severed wheel was found and handed over to the aircraft operator for further investigation.

On February 25 morning at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, there was a suspicious fire in the landing gear of another airplane. The regional DHC-8 airliner was heading to the gate after landing at 6 a.m., when the plane wheel got suddenly in fire. Airport firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.

The aircraft was towed to the gate to allow passengers to exit. The airline described the incident as “the failure of one of the ball bearings on one of the wheels,” which caused smoke and sparks.

The Canadian Transportation Safety Council reported that no one was injured and emergency evacuation of the aircraft has not been required. There were 48 passengers and 3 crew members onboard.
